Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport – Advanced & Enabling Works

Project Overview

New metro rail will become the transport spine for Greater Western Sydney, connecting communities and travellers with the new Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport and the growing region.

The city-shaping project, from St Marys through to the new airport and the Western Sydney Aerotropolis, will provide a major economic stimulus for western Sydney, supporting more than 14,000 jobs during construction for the NSW and national economies.

The 23-kilometre new railway will link residential areas with job hubs including the new Aerotropolis, and connect travellers from the new airport to the rest of Sydney’s public transport system.

The Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport metro line tunnelling contract was awarded in December 2021 to CPB Contractors and Ghella to build the new twin metro rail tunnels. Major work will start soon.

Scope of Works – Power

To construct the twin tunnels for the Sydney Metro – Western Sydney Airport project, tunnel boring machines, road headers and other heavy machinery will be required from 2023. These machines will need a dedicated power supply.

To provide this, power will be supplied from nearby existing substations or overhead cables to newly installed power kiosks at Sydney Metro’s construction sites. Power supply work will also include relocating overhead cables underground for the construction and operation of the Metro.

Power supply routes have been determined based on the location of existing utilities and available space for cables and conduits to be installed within road reserve. This is to minimise impacts on private property.

Scope of Works – Water

To enable the expansion of Western Sydney and surrounding areas, the New South Wales government has indentified the need to progressively upgrade arterial roads and railway network.

To facilitate the broader Sydney Metro WSA Project, a Stabling and Maintenance Facility at Orchard Hills is required to control the new metro railway and trains.

Quickway have been engaged by Sydney Metro to undetake utility adjustments for the Stabling and Maintenance Facility.
