Project Overview

The Country Regional Network (CRN) involved the maintenance and upgrading of 2,700 km of operational freight and passenger lines and 3,100 km of non-operational lines throughout NSW.

The CRN scope included construction or replacement of 600 existing rail under bridges and 384 road bridges and associated works.

Project Description

Quickway were engaged to carry out the replacement of existing life-expired timber bridge with a new spandrel arch bridge. The scope of our works included:

  • Demolition of existing bridge and bridge abutments
  • Excavation for, and construction of new in-situ bridge footings
  • Supply and installation of precast spandrel arches, spandrel walls and connection plates
  • Supply and installation of backfilling to new abutments
  • Installation of mass block wing walls
  • Installation of in-situ barriers, barrier railing, thrie beams connections and W-beams
  • Approach earthworks and associated roadworks

The scope of work for the project included excavation for the new substructure in rock and disposal of unsuitable fill material, the construction of new reinforced concrete strip footings followed by the installation of 12m precast arches, spandrel walls and connecting plates. Retaining walls were constructed using Humes Mass Bloc system providing compaction and testing of backfilling to wing wall structures and battered embankments, construct new in-situ reinforced concrete deck kerbs, footpaths and all jointing and in-situ F-type barrier sections. Construction was completed while existing Railway Terrace bridge was operational. All construction temporary works with design certification were provided during the construction process for formwork and high risks works.

Key Challenges

  • Working within the rail corridor – we needed to liaise with ARTC (and affected industry) in relation to managing works in the rail corridor inclusive of obtaining possessions, attending meetings requested by ARTC and liaising with contractors during major possession works
  • Community / Stakeholder Relations – interface with Wingecarribee Shire Council in all facets of construction to minimise delays
  • Existing overbridge needed to remain open until new structure was completed
  • Relocation of power poles in the work zone that clashed with new road approaches
  • Deadlines to coincide with the future package of work completing the road approaches over the old Hume highway.
