Project Overview
The aim of the Southern Freight Link was to increase the efficiency of freight transport between Melbourne and Brisbane, passing through Sydney. Prior to the construction of the SFL there existed a bottleneck in the rail freight network in Southern Sydney, where freight and passenger rail transport shared the existing rail lines. The project consisted of the construction of a 36 kilometre dedicated freight line (between Birrong and Macarthur) to alleviate the delays and inconveniences experienced and to allow passengers and freight to operate independently.
